Marco Gonzalez is an archaeological site on the southern tip of the Island of Ambergris Caye off the coast of Belize. The original Maya name for the site is unknown and it is named after a local guide.
It formed part of the Maya people’s network of production and trade in salt between the Yucatan peninsula and the coast of Belize from approximately 300 B.C. to 1250 A.D.
In 2014 I had the privilege of working as a volunteer on the site and recorded some excavations for the Institute of Archaeology at University College London.
